A Cut Above

Whitney started making films when he was 7 years old. He commandeered a camcorder and filmed action figures around the house, then scored the films with a toy keyboard and edited them using two VCRs.

When he was in high school, he programmed and provided content for the local cable access station. In college, he made his first feature film, which went on to win the audience award at the New York International Independent Film Festival. He took photos at punk and heavy metal shows, as well as at weddings.

In 2009 he started Above the Cut. The purpose of the moniker is to provide a home for a unique point of view. Whitney isn’t a journeyman videographer, nor an entrepreneur who settled on photography. He is an artist with over twenty years of experience.

Whitney’s approach is iconoclastic and idiosyncratic. If you gave Jimi Hendrix any guitar, it would be good, because he’s good. Whitney will use an Arri Alexa, a GoPro, a disposable camera and an iPhone all at once to demonstrate his belief that it’s not about the arrow, it’s the archer.

— Richard Gomes, Levi Strauss Americas
He has the innate ability and sensibility to make even the most mundane topic shine like an award-winning film in short form video.

We also had a blast shooting and going through editing, I’d absolutely hire Whitney again, we’re extremely happy with the video.
